If you're a fan of baseball, you might have heard of the Cape Cod Baseball League, a summer collegiate league that has been running for over 100 years. For those unfamiliar with the league, let's take a closer look at what makes it such a beloved institution in the world of baseball.
History of the League
The Cape Cod Baseball League was founded in 1885, making it one of the oldest baseball leagues in the United States. However, it wasn't until the 1960s that the league really gained widespread recognition. That was when the league began attracting top college players from around the country, turning it into a highly competitive summer league that scouts from major league teams began to take notice of.
Today, the Cape Cod Baseball League is widely considered to be the top summer league for college baseball players. Over 1,000 of its alumni have gone on to play in the major leagues, including players such as Carlton Fisk, Chris Sale, and Nomar Garciaparra.
How the League Works
Each summer, the league consists of 10 teams, each made up of college players from around the country. The season runs from mid-June to mid-August, with each team playing a total of 44 regular-season games.
The league is made up of two divisions: the East Division and the West Division. The top four teams from each division advance to the playoffs, which are held in early August.
One of the unique aspects of the Cape Cod Baseball League is that the players stay with host families throughout the summer. This not only helps the players save on housing costs, but it also allows them to experience life on Cape Cod and immerse themselves in the local community.
For baseball fans, the Cape Cod Baseball League is a must-see attraction. Not only does it offer the chance to see top college players in action, but it also provides a glimpse into the unique culture and community of Cape Cod. Whether you're a local or a visitor to the area, be sure to catch a game or two during the summer months. Each team has a unique field and a family-friendly atmosphere. I will see you there!
